Regular as clockwork
Though not so constant
You flit into my life
My sometime companion
Then vanish as though
You were a phantom
Or the sweetest of dreams
But you always appear
When the clouds begin
To roll across my sky
And bring with your smile
Just enough rays of the sun
To allow me to see
In the reflection of your eyes
Myself, as I stand
And I am not alone
And I am not afraid
And I am not weak
And when my strength
Is rejuvenated
To the point where I
Can continue alone
You depart, leaving behind
Vague promises
Which leave me hopeful
Though somewhat empty
For promises cannot hold me
And promises cannot carry me
And promises cannot comfort me
For long.
